Newest Pluto pictures show jumbled mountains, possible dunes

The spigot has opened again, and Pluto pictures are pouring in once more from NASA's New Horizons spacecraft. In one picture, dark ancient craters border much younger icy plains. Dark ridges also are visible that some scientists speculate might be dunes.

One outer solar-system geologist, William McKinnon of Washington University in St. Louis, said if the ridges are, in fact, dunes, that would be "completely wild" given Pluto's thin atmosphere.

“The most damning revelation you can make about yourself is that you do not know what is interesting and what is not” ― Kurt Vonnegut

Officially, the book is titled The American Practical Navigator, but it's more commonly called Bowditch after Nathaniel Bowditch, the young prodigy who wrote the original 1802 edition. For two centuries, copies of this book have settled themselves onto the bridges of ships circling the globe, and helped guide mariners safely from place to place. It has been the foundation for Navigators, for 213 years, an atypically long reign for a scientific manual.

In the 1790s, when Bowditch’s seafaring career began, the most accurate way of determining a ship’s position was through celestial navigation. But to use the stars and moon as a perfect guide required complex mathematics, beyond the skills of most sailors. Instead they used blunter navigational tools and relied on The Practical Navigator, a guide by John Hamilton Moore, a British instructor of navigation. Bowditch, too, began by relying on this book. But soon he was finding errors in it, and rewriting the book’s most useful tables. He also started working out a simplified way of calculating lunar distances, between the Moon and a star or planet, which could be then be used to determine longitude, even by sailors who were not math geniuses.

The art and science of Navigation

Around this same time, a publisher in New England, Edmund Blunt, was looking to update Moore’s Practical Navigator and issue an American edition. He hired Bowditch and other navigational experts to comb through the original text for errors; in that first American edition, published in 1799, Bowditch also contributed a chapter outlining his simplified strategy for determining longitude from lunar distances. For the next American edition, published in 1802, Bowditch made so many corrections and additions to Moore’s work that Blunt released it as an entirely new book: The New American Practical Navigator, by Nathaniel Bowditch.

There’s still a section on celestial navigation in the 2002 edition of Bowditch, the most recent update, although it has shrunk considerably over 200 years. The basic math might be the same, but the details and the precision have improved. It still tells mariners how to move along coastlines and pilot ships, but now has huge sections on radar and other modern tools for getting a ship from one place to another safely. Clifford, along with colleagues at the Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Navy and other parts of the government, is currently working on the book's next big update, which is scheduled to be published in 2017. Bowditch's original American publisher, Blunt, kept releasing editions until the U.S. government bought the copyright in 1867 and took over the job of keeping the book's contents current. These days, it covers a huge swath of modern knowledge: electronic navigation, radio waves, electronic charts, navigational safety, oceanography, meteorology and more—everything that goes into the contemporary art of navigation.

Syria is really important, but it can also be confusing and difficult to follow even for those of us glued to it.

The most basic answers to your most basic questions. First, a disclaimer: Syria and its history are really complicated; this is not an exhaustive or definitive account of that entire story, just some background, written so that anyone can understand it.

The killing started in April 2011, when peaceful protests inspired by earlier revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia rose up to challenge the dictatorship running the country. The government responded, there is no getting around this, like monsters. First security forces quietly killed activists. Then they started kidnapping, raping, torturing and killing activists and their family members, including a lot of children , dumping their mutilated bodies by the sides of roads. Then military troops began simply opening fire on protests. Eventually, civilians started shooting back.

MIT and NASA are testing some bowling ball-size droids that look and act a lot like the “remotes” Luke Skywalker used to practice his light saber skills. (Officially, of course, these are called SPHERES, as in Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellite. Seriously?) NASA insists they’re designed to test automated rendezvous and formation flying in zero-gravity.

General Motors and NASA have developed a C3PO type robot, called Robonaut, that’s designed to support human crew member operations in space. It upper torso and arms were delivered to the International Space Station in 2011 and it has since acquired a set of legs that allows it to move about the ISS interior spaces. It will eventually be able to work outside the Space Station performing tasks that are too difficult or hazardous for a human astronaut.

NASA and the Made In Space Company developed an ISS-based 3D printer specifically designed and delivered for use on the ISS. A practical demonstration occurred in December of last year when a digital design file for a ratchet wrench was transmitted from the ground to the Space Station and the wrench was successfully printed on board.

Invasion of the Star Creatures

A pair of comically inept US Army soldiers, Privates Philbrick (Robert Ball) and Penn (Frankie Ray), are sent along with several competent troopers to investigate a newly discovered cave near Fort Nicholson, in an unnamed western US state. Leaving the pair to guard the cave entrance, the others go inside and are quickly overpowered by "vegetable Monsters" which prove to be controlled by two tall Amazon-like humanoid Alien women, Professor Puna (Dolores Reed) and Dr Tanga (Gloria Victor), from the planet Chalar. They have set up base in the cave to prepare the way for an Invasion of Earth, and have enough information to depart shortly in their Spaceship. After considerable foolishness on the part of Philbrick and Penn, they discover the women can be mentally confused by a simple kiss which affects their higher brain functions. This allows the pair to rescue their companions and foil the invasion plans by preventing the women's departure. At the conclusion, they are married to Puna and Tanga, who have decided to remain on Earth and presumably to forget their home world

An Alcubierre Warp Drive stretches spacetime in a wave causing the fabric of space ahead of a spacecraft to contract and the space behind it to expand. The ship can ride the wave to accelerate to high speeds and time travel.

Miguel Alcubierre, theorized that faster-than-light speeds were possible in a way that did not contradict Einstein by harnessing the expansion and contraction of space itself. Under Dr. Alcubierre’s hypothesis, a ship still couldn’t exceed light speed in a local region of space. But a theoretical propulsion system he sketched out manipulated space-time by generating a so-called “warp bubble” that would expand space on one side of a spacecraft and contract it on another.

Cassini flew past Saturn's moon Enceladus for its 20th targeted encounter. Cassini has seen and photographed quite a lot of Enceladus before, but there's still new terrain for it to cover. Saturn has seasons just like Earth does, except they take much longer. When Cassini arrived at Saturn in 2004, it had just passed the southern summer solstice, so the south poles of Saturn and all the moons were bathed in continuous sunlight while large areas of their northern poles were in shadow. The equinox happened in August, 2009, bringing sunlight to the north poles for the first time in a decade. Even then, the sunlight barely reached the polar regions, throwing long shadows that obscured the terrain. It's only now, late in the mission, that Cassini is getting a good look at Enceladus' north pole

The elite media set a framework within which others operate.
