There were two Buddhist holidays this week. Asarnha Bucha (Tues) and Khao Pansaa (Wed). These holidays turn Thailand upside down because all bars and restaurants in Thailand were officially closed between midnight on Monday and midnight on Wednesday. All local stores, supermarkets, Seven-Elevens and Family Marts are also forbidden to sell alcohol on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Asarnha Bucha Day is one of the four most important holy days in the Thai Buddhist calendar. The event commemorates the historic Buddha’s first public sermon some 2,500 years ago and is considered to be the birthday of Buddhism.
Khao Pansaa, or Buddhist Lent Day, is the first day of the monks ‘rain retreat’ meaning they confine themselves to the temples in order to avoid walking on the crops during the rainy season. Candles are lit and parades are held. They are thought to provide enlightenment during the monks confinement and prayer.
